February 27, 2021
Proposals are now being accepted to present during the 2021 MichMATYC Conference through April 1, 2021. This year’s conference is hosted by Lansing Community College on October 8-9 with the theme Mathematics Support and Success: A Vision for the Future. What makes each of our conferences great are the wonderful presentations and great host college each year!
There are several presentation formats to choose from regarding your proposal. We have the traditional 45-minute presentation during a break-out session. However, we also have options for presenting a workshop, panel discussion, commercial vendor presentation, or at our inaugural

If you have done one of the following, then you are in a key position to present at this year’s conference:

- Used innovative teaching/learning techniques,
- Introducing and evaluating critical thinking in the classroom,
- Participated in discussions/debates related to teaching mathematics
- Share a topic that will enrich our understanding in a field of mathematics,
- Discuss how you implemented AMATYC Impact Live standards in your classroom.

- Math Pathways
- Corequisite Courses
- Critical Thinking in the Classroom
- Student Success Strategies
- Equity and Justice
- Best Practices for Teaching Online
These are ideas for the sessions. If you have other topics you would like to address, please feel free to submit those as well. We would love to hear your ideas! If you have attended AMATYC Ignite!, then you know that it is one of the highlights of the conference.
The review of proposals will begin immediately after the April 1, 2021 deadline. Letters of invitation to present at the conference are expected to be emailed in May.

Evaluators Needed for AMATYC Student Research League
January 5, 2021
From March 12-29, the 4th AMATYC Student Research League competition will be held. The competition requires groups of 1-3 students to perform research and to solve an open-ended question requiring mathematics. Students will defend their thesis in a formal paper.
The papers will be evaluated at multiple levels, but AMATYC needs your help in recruiting people for the first level of evaluation. Evaluators will review theses from all over the AMATYC Midwest region consisting of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois. It is a wonderful opportunity to see what great students we have all over our state and region competing in the Student Research League.
As a Student Research League evaluator, you will be given the rubric that the final evaluators will be using, but you will not have to fill it out (Evaluation Process link). You will simply be asked to comment on what the strong components of the entry are and what areas could use improvement. You will then give an overall rating of A, B, or C.
You will be given the entries that you will be evaluating by April 15. You will have until June 15 to complete the evaluations. AMATYC will try to limit the number of entries that you would need to evaluate to around a half dozen or so, but until they find out how many entries are in the AMATYC Midwest region, the exact number is uncertain. AMATYC will work with the volunteers so that no one is overwhelmed with too many entries to evaluate.
Evaluators of the Student Research League will be acknowledged with a letter from AMATYC, which may be useful for faculty promotion purposes. If you are interested in serving as an AMATYC Student Research League evaluator, please submit your interest to me at (president@michmatyc.org) by March 1, 2021. Additional information regarding the AMATYC Student Research League can be found here.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the AMATYC Student Research League Coordinator, Karen Gaines, at srl@amatyc.org.

Time to Register as a Presenter at the 46th Annual AMATYC Conference
Jan 26, 2020
As I am sure you know the 46th Annual AMATYC Conference in Spokane, Washington will be happening November 12-15, 2020 and the deadline to submit proposals to present at the conference is rapidly approaching.
If you are unfamiliar with Spokane let me tell you just a few reasons why it is a GREAT place to have an AMATYC conference:
- There are direct flights from 17 cities in the United States and numerous more 1 stop flights. The airport is a short 10-15 minute drive (8 miles) from the convention center.
- There are 80-100 restaurants within 0.5 miles from the convention center. Being in the Northwest, we are also into wine, beer, and coffee. Spokane has about 12-14 wine tasting rooms downtown and numerous local breweries and boutique coffee shops. All of this is within easy walking distance from the convention center and hotels. Or you could use our fabulous public transportation system!
- With Riverfront Park, First Interstate Center for the Arts, Spokane Arena, The Historic Art Deco Fox Theatre, River Park Square shopping, museums, and 4 local universities there are certain to be lots of entertainment options for your enjoyment while at the conference.
- The rate for the conference hotels is only $142 per night and they are quite luxurious. Check them out here.
- As always at AMATYC there are great sessions, talks, panels and poster sessions that help us all do the best possible jobs for our students!
Ah, but it is this last point where AMATYC needs your help. Why not share your great idea and vision for the future of mathematics at the conference? There are lots of different ways to present your idea - a session, mini-session, workshop, chat and chew table talk, poster session. The deadline to register as a presenter for the 46th Annual AMATYC Conference is February 1, 2020. Fortunately it so easy to register for a presentation that even a Sasquatch can do it and this helpful video shows you how.
I hope to see you all at the 46th Annual AMATYC Conference in Spokane!

Edfinity and MichMATYC Grant Opportunity
Nov 24, 2019
Edfinity and MichMATYC wish to recognize an educator who has made substantial efforts to further the cause of equitable access to high-quality homework and/or course materials in mathematics.
The award is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Award #1758301 titled “Edfinity Award for Technology-enabled Innovation in Improving Student Access to Quality Learning Resources” does not require the work product or outcome to be OER-based - it only requires it to be an innovative alternative to expensive commercial publisher offerings - one that bears the potential for increasing equitable access at scale. Ideally, the effort should have been independently validated to some degree through classroom adoption or usage. The awardee will be selected by the MichMATYC Executive Board at its discretion and the award, which includes a cash disbursement of $300.
Educators are invited to apply to MichMATYC to be considered for the award. Please fill out the form and it will be forwarded to the MichMATYC Executive Board for consideration. The deadline for consideration is Sunday, December 15.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Sam Bazzi.
